25I did nother video review for this one Secrets of the Lotus and if you want to watch it you can here But if you re not into video reviews here s brief written review in the language of BumpedIt was like rilly rilly The Evil Genius Guide allbout young girls pregging for money Like for seriously young But it was okay cause they were being like patriotic nd ll This was YA dystopian story bout world where people went sterile round the Pursuit age of 20The characters in this were okaylthough Harmony didn t behave uite the way I expected her to considering that she wanted her sister to find God yet then did something that went gainst what she herself believedThe storyline in this had some good ideas but the way the book was written was little odd There were lso uite few made up words Chariot on the Mountain and some odd things like condoms being illegal The basic story was entertaining thoughnd I did enjoy itThe ending to this was okay nd I will be reading the seuel to find out what happens next65 out of 10 Ugh Having enjoyed the first two Jessica Darling novels I was mused by Bumped s description s dystopian world where only teenagers can procreate due to virus that renders every dult infertile McCafferty Back on Top and HarperTeen introduce the books stunningly close to home given the new obsession with pregnant teens I tag this book dystopian with trepidation I get nnoyed when writers don t d Wha wha WHAAT What just happened there Okay let s start t the beginning Bumped is The Silence of the Chihuahuas a dystopian novel set in 2035 where virus has wiped out the bility of every person over the ge of eighteen to reproduce Why eighteen How eighteen Does the virus come built in with n ge o meter that tells it when to strike The population is rapidly declining leaving only one section of the planet capable of procreating The teenagers At the point t which this novel starts it is lready established that there is flourishing trade in surrogacy it being ccepted practice for teenagers to have sex with the intent of producing baby that is then given way for doption to older couples who can no longer reproduce The surrogate mothers re divided into two groups the Reproductive Professionals RePros who Final Seconds are stringently scrutinized on genetic level to ensure their The Czech Legion 1914–20 acceptabilitynd then paired with nother hand picked sperm donor The babies of the RePros re optioned for large sums of money even before the reproductive process begins The other group The Divine Circle of Ladies Courting Trouble are themateurs people who pick their own partners A Bridge Through Time and either donate their babies pro bono or put them up fordoption in public uction The entire process is facilitated by the dministration of drug called Tocin that A Change of Heart actss F/Studio anphrodisiac during intercourse West End Girls 2 and later during pregnancy serves to sever the chemical bond between mothernd child in order to ensure that the mother does not become broody nd insist on keeping her child Megan McCafferty s world building is detailed nd convincing for the most part She establishes A Decadent Way to Die (Savannah Reid Mystery, a whole new society with new laws new regulations new snd even Free Fall (Sisterhood, a new slanguagell revolving round this new world where the only hope for the dvancement of the planet re the youth literally This is world where sex is Needled to Death (A Helping Hands Mystery a business for teenagers where lovemaking is looked down uponnd peer pressure makes uestioning the system n impossibility And on the other hand re the trubies the members of the Church who segregate themselves in communal settlements nd re forbidden to leave the settlements except for missionary or One Last Time agricultural purposes The segregation works to the benefit of Church members in that the incidence of the virus is significantly lowermongst them However the Church society is rigidly moral nd fanatically religious dhering to Huckleberry Harvest an outmoded code of behavior that condemns pre marital sex instigates marriagest ge thirteen or so nd Grandmothers Against the War: How We Got Off Our Fannies and Stood Up for Peace abhors technology cough Amish coughI hope you read thebove bits of the review before you get started on the book because McCafferty goes to the other extreme from infodump writing She s stingy with information nd sly bout it She slips vital bits of information into random conversations ll over the book so blink nd you ll miss it this lso makes the ll miss it This lso makes the fourth of the book heavy going "until you get Out of His League a firmer grasp on the world buildingnd slanguage I can confidently "you get First Degree Mudder a firmer grasp on the world buildingnd slanguage I can confidently that no book in recent times has made me think London's Best Kept Secret as muchs Bumped With The Hunger Games the dystopia was cut in stone unuestionable the lessons it imparted were eually clear nd unmistakable But with Bumped it s different situation ltogether Firstly I had to look up the definition of dystopia because the tone of the book did not match my idea of what dystopian society should sound like And indeed in the strictest sense of the word Bumped is not dystopia According to the dictionary dystopia is society characterized by human misery s sualor oppression disease nd overcrowding Wikipedia goes on to inform me that dystopian society usually features different kinds of repressive social control systems lack or total bsence of individual freedoms nd expressions nd constant states of warfare or violence On the face of it you can t call the society in Bumped dystopian There is no sualor human misery or overcrowding than there is in ny normal society Not much disease either except for the biggie the Human Progressive Sterility Virus There re no overt repressive social control systems no lack of individual freedoms nd no warfare or violence There is no mandate that says Romeo for Real all teenagers MUST get pregnant BUTnd this is big but there is n underlying nuance of oppression of enforced choices Nobody made law saying everybody must get pregnant but the society has restructured itself in such way that people NOT making the LogoLounge 2 attempt to create babiesre looked upon Bad Billy Brighton as both unpatrioticnd non productive members of society Teenagers one of the easiest ge groups to influence have been brainwashed into thinking that it is just nd right for them to become baby making machines to sell off their virginity their womb nd their right to childhood in exchange for secure future nd prestige mongst their peers Babies re bought nd sold like goods in market A Knife in the Heart and nobody uestions this outrage it is simplyccepted Into this scenario come Harmony nd Melody monozygotic identical twins separated t birth Both have been raised in completely different environments that have no meeting point Harmony has been given to Church family to be raised nd is t first glance devout Church member with loving family full of missionary zeal Melody has been raised in life of privilege by educated A Bollywood Affair affluent parents in suburb of Princeton She s the ideal RePro with contract mounting to six figures nd the perfect face body nd mind to ensure The Scent of Rosa's Oil an enviable genetic heritage for her child But slowly the surface layer peels off to reveal the deeper truths both sistersre hiding Despite being from vastly differing different backgrounds both twins have uestioning bent of mind in societies where uestioning the norm is not encouraged They re both clinging to the ideas Nobodys Angel (Willow Park, and beliefs they have been brought up with in the hopes of shoring up fast degrading faith in the rightness of society s it is If there is one complaint I have to make bout Harmony nd Melody it is in McCafferty s characterization of them As vehicles to uestion the norms of the world they live in they re perfect But McCafferty ppears to have become so enad of their purpose that they lose their identity s people There is too much happening Defending Hearts around themnd to them but the change that is caused within them by these events is left little too much to the reader s powers of deduction McCafferty spends so much time building her society that the human spect of the relationship between the two sisters suffers They spend hardly ny time together s result their eventual bonding feels contr. Ived Zen too is character with great potential for being interesting but he doesn t get enough page space to translate the potential into reality The premise of Bumped Spiky also highlightsnother issue that I have been pondering for while the uestion of whether book bout teenagers is lways necessarily Dungeon of Death a Young Adult book I found Bumped to be highly sexual read nd perhaps little too sophisticated ideologically for the YA group You don t need to describe MasSex orgies or RePro sessions in detail in order to introduce Love Rockets a sexual element into book In fact McCafferty has done it in n effortlessly ungraphic way But there is no denying that book that deals with the uestion of reproductive choice is of necessity sexual Added to it A Deceptive Homecoming (Hattie Davish Mystery, are the numerous sexual double entendres peppering the conversation of every character in the book It slmost horrifying how casually these teenagers ccept the idea of sex nd toss round words like pro boner nd hornergy nd everythingbut s in everything but sex No doubt this is the point that is intended to be driven home but in genre ruled by the Mormon cliue I m not sure how positively this portrayal will be received While this review nd the subject matter re somewhat sombre kudos to Megan McCafferty for lightening the tone of the book Despite what lies beneath the The Hired Man actual tone of the book is much lighter satirical than introspective It s not hard read emotionally but it is intellectually stimulatingBumped is undoubtedly one of the most interesting books I have read in long long time However I cannot begin to describe my frustration with how the book ends It s like finding beautiful first edition copy of classic nd then discovering that the critical last pages Almost A Gentleman are missing I think this is intended to be series lthough I can find no indication of it on her website but it MUST be so because that ending doesn t really ualify s n ending I was just left dangling from rope with no safety net in sight Where is my neatly wrapped up ll ends tied HEA This is definitely book worth reading one that I would recommend without hesitation Four stars for some great world building nd innovative ideas Minus one star for some clunky sentence structure excessive use of slanguage insufficient character development the slow beginning nd THAT ENDINGPS I think the cover for this book is one of the most dorable things I ve seen in forever DISCLOSURE I received copy of this book from the publishers via Net Galley No considerations monetary or otherwise influenced this review A virus has made everyone over the Here by the Bloods age of eighteen infertile so young teensre being used s surrogates while they re ble to conceive making teens the most prized members of society Sixteen year old twins Melody nd Harmony were separated t birth but have now been reunited nd learning just how different but like that they re Melody has obtained conception contract with the Jaydens but while searching for the perfect partner for Melody to bump with she is fighting her ttraction to her best friend Zen who is not Bound (Torn Trilogy, a good partner Harmony on the other hand has been raised in religious community nd is set to marry nd become good wife instead of getting involved in the high profits of carrying others babies The whole idea behind Bumped seemed like really interesting idea that I had high hopes for but when finished I was left with bit of let down feeling This whole futuristic society seemed to just be set Loyalty and Lies around naming things with different words but not really explaining what or how things got to where they were in such short time While I wanted to the world building nd plot I lso found that I felt the characters were Fortunes Flames a tad irritating to met times too for personal reasoning I m not really fan of the idea of religion being pushed upon others so when I was introduced to Harmony in the story I really didn t care for her but that may just be me nd it might not bother others Otherwise there were little details in the story I was lso uestioning or just didn t care for too which didn t help my enjoyment level t ll with this one In the end this just wasn t for me unfortunately I m sure some will love it but I just didn t find myself enjoying the way it was done fter finding the idea incredibly interesting I ll be honest I ve been DREADING writing this review I was SO looking forward to this book I just couldn t wait to get my hands on it I loved McCafferty s Jessica Darling series nd I couldn t wait to read her first ttempt t Dystopian fic one of my favorite genres Imagine my bsolute delight when I received n Advanced Review Copy of this bad boy sighAs you ve probably guessed by now this book was Claiming Her a huge disappointment McCafferty s writing is still there Funny sparkly wittynd everything else that made Jessica Darling so fun to read However the premise for the book while intended to be satirical just did not work AT ALL The idea is simple lbeit far fetched For some unknown reason that is not developed some kind of virus humans somehow lose the bility to procreate fter the ge of 18 Why 18 is the cut off date is never discussed So s result teenagers become hot com So Melody nd Harmony re our two main characters And guess what they re twins NawreallyNot that they re bad names but twins named Melody Murder Go Round and Harmony Cliche muchThe similar nameslso made it very difficult to keep straight on who was who The perspective jumps back How Foreign Policy Decisions Are Made In The Third World: A Comparative Analysis and forth between the two of them justbout every couple pages or so The breakneck speed of this book in the sense in which I would normally pply the word But I uite fascinated by the themes nd interested to see how they would be developed In truth Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of agree or disagree with the portrayals of the characters teen pregnancy or religion in this books I found parts in both narratives to be problematic Blank Darkness at times However I couldppreciate that large part of this story is bout gaining insight into other viewpoints Makers and becoming self determined in the face of incredible pressure from peers parentsnd society To vilify one side of Bouncing Back: A Young Woman's Adventures into Womanhood and buying baby ends up having whole new meaning So begins the tale of Melody one of the first teens to demand contract My Lady Viper (Tales From the Tudor Court, and Harmony her long lost twin who ended up in church congregation that believes teens who provide this bumping service need to stop nd find God The story leads us into what happens when Harmony comes in contact with her sister for the first time nd how maybe this whole buying babies may not be the right nswerEven though this whole idea scares me to death I might have liked the book little better if the uthor hadn t glorified teen pregnancy so much I know that this world believes that teens re the nswer but I had the feeling while I was reading that there was hidden genda nd it gave me Dunkirk: Fight to the Last Man an icky feeling The biggest problem I had was why in the world did these teens have to bumpka have sex McCafferty created this world to be very high tech Throughout the book I kept thinking The Light in Our Houses about the movie Back To the Future when Marty McFly goes into the futurend you see ll this high tech euipment With ll of this high tech stuff I would have thought that she could have written better way for these teens to become pregnant Again I felt that she glorified things little too much Throughout most of the book I was cringing because of the extremes that some of these poor teens went through to get pregnant To give you How to Get People to Do Stuff: The Psychology of Persuasion an example the cheerclones had masSEXparties where the whole point is to trynd get pregnant t the same time nd the guys get to pretty much have sex with s many girls s possible This is gross nd in this day nd Highland Hucow: Milking Marie age where so many teen girls think that getting pregnant is fun I think this send the wrong message It is not until the end of the book that Melody starts rethinking her decision to ben incubator Call the Fire Brigade: Fighting London's Fires and by this time so many things have happened that it really makes no difference This book was not wrapped upt ll nd there is cliff hanger
